The Tripod Beta Road Map: From the Training Room to the Investigation Room

In the training room, Tripod Beta can be explored one concept at a time. There is time to discuss the logic of a Trio, examine different types of barriers and work through the relationship between Immediate Causes, Preconditions and Underlying Causes. Examples are selected to illustrate the methodology, and questions can be considered before moving to the next step.

A real investigation rarely unfolds so conveniently. Information arrives in fragments. Accounts may differ. Facts, assumptions and interpretations can easily become mixed. The investigation team has to decide what to pursue, how to structure the emerging story and whether the analysis still reflects what the evidence actually shows.

That is the moment when Tripod Beta moves from the training room to the investigation room.

The Methodology Meets the Reality of an Investigation

Knowing the principles of Tripod Beta remains essential. Applying them during an investigation requires practitioners to retrieve the right principle at the right moment.

• Is the Event really an unintended change of state, or does it describe an action?

• Does the Agent describe what should have been controlled, or merely what appeared to fail?

• Is the proposed barrier specific enough?

• Would it actually have prevented the Event or protected the Object?

• Does an Underlying Cause explain how the organisation created or sustained a Precondition, or is the wording still too vague to support meaningful improvement?

These are not unusual questions. They are part of the normal process of developing and challenging an analysis.

The difficulty is not necessarily understanding each concept in isolation. It is maintaining the logic and quality of the complete analysis while new information, alternative interpretations and practical constraints compete for attention.

A Practical Reference at the Point of Use

The first Tripod Beta Road Map was developed many years ago to support practitioners at precisely that point. It was not intended to replace Tripod Beta training or provide a shortcut around the methodology. Nor was it designed as another document to read once and then store in a folder. It was meant to be used.

The Road Map provides a compact reference that practitioners can keep beside them while preparing an investigation, gathering information, conducting interviews, building Trios, identifying barriers or developing causation paths. It brings together practical guidance, definitions, examples, verification questions and reminders covering the complete investigation and analysis process.

Sometimes a practitioner needs detailed methodological guidance. At other moments, a concise question or visual prompt is enough to challenge the team and restore the logic of the analysis. The Road Map was designed for those moments.

Shaped by Questions from Practice

The Road Map has never been a static publication. Each version has been influenced by questions and discussions arising during training programmes, investigation workshops and the review of Tripod analyses. Feedback from trainees, practitioners, trainers and assessors has helped identify where additional explanation was needed and where a different example, question or visual could make the methodology more accessible in practice.

That is also why the Road Map has now reached its tenth edition. Version 10 is not simply a rebranded copy of its predecessor. It reflects the continuing development of a practitioner tool shaped by the people who use, teach and assess Tripod Beta.

This development also reflects an important principle of professional practice: competence does not end when formal training is completed. It grows through application, reflection, challenge and continued learning from others.

What Is New in Version 10?

Version 10 has been revised and expanded from 50 to 58 pages.

The structure now gives more distinct attention to the main elements of the Tripod Beta analysis, including Trios, Barriers, Immediate Causes, Preconditions and Underlying Causes. This makes it easier for practitioners to locate guidance for the specific stage of the analysis they are working on.

The guidance on building Trios has also been clarified and extended. The Road Map now places greater emphasis on identifying the Main Event, checking the logic within each Trio and understanding how Events connect successive Trios.

Additional practical visuals and verification questions have been included, together with tools such as the Energy Wheel to support the identification of the Agent of Change.

The result is a more complete and navigable reference while retaining the pragmatic format that has always defined the Road Map.

A Companion to Training and the Official User Guide

The Tripod Beta Road Map is intended for trained practitioners. It does not replace the official Guidance on using Tripod Beta, commonly known as the Tripod Beta User Guide, published by the Energy Institute on behalf of the Stichting Tripod Foundation.

The User Guide provides the methodological depth and formal guidance needed to properly understand Tripod Beta. The Road Map serves a different but complementary purpose: helping practitioners retrieve and apply key principles as they carry out the work.

Neither publication can determine the quality of an investigation on its own. That quality continues to depend on the competence, curiosity and critical thinking of the investigation team.
